To wear: running in the cold

The weather outside is biting, and running should be delighting, but when it's so cold, you know, the wardrobe has got to grow.  How's that for a little holiday ditty to the tune of Let it Snow! :o) ?

But seriously, as the temperature drops, my running wardrobe increases - and I mean that in layers.  Here are some of my favorites:

To wear: a topper

I am a firm believer in wearing a helmet when biking.  A few months ago I forgot my helmet when leaving the house and didn't realize it until I was at the bottom of our hill and the wind was blowing through my hair.  What did I do? Trek back up the hill to get the helmet.  I am SO thankful I was wearing a helmet on Friday - Matt and I were looking at it this morning and I managed to crack the foam all the way through to the shell with my fall.  Whoa.  So the first and most important thing to wear (when biking) is a good helmet:

As I now have a giant gash on my head that will no doubt turn into a big scar, I am becoming quite fond of hats.  I've always liked them but now I'm starting to think of them like mascara or chap-stick - just another thing you throw on that ties everything together.  My favorites?  Goorin Bros. Hats - a company from San Francisco that luckily has a store here in Seattle.  Yesterday I treated myself to this fedora (but mine has white pinstripes):

Feeling beige

The weather has turned in Seattle, and snow is in the forecast.  So - it's time to get out my cold weather duds.  I have fallen for sweater dresses this year and they seem to be my go-to staple.  But, in the dark/cloudy days of Seattle, a bit of color is needed, too - intro, the scarf.

Here's my dream outfit of the day:

To wear: Running in the rain

Running in the rain
Just running in the rain
What a glorious feeling
I'm happy again
I run through the city
In a happy refrain
I'm running and running in the rain ...

(I do hope you know what tune to read that to ...)

It's finally raining in the city and I LOVE it!!! The rain is my favorite weather hands down - it's perfect for cozy afternoons with movies and tea (or twins who want to be entertained constantly), it's a good excuse to wear sweats around, and most of all, it's my favorite weather to run in. Yeah, kinda nuts.

When I started thinking on what I typically wear running in the rain, I realized it's usually whatever clean race shirt I have somewhere, and my dry fit running tights. When I think of what I'd like to wear running in the rain, it's similar, but more on the dry fit side:

To Wear Wednesday: 2nd hand!

Pregnancy is not a time to break the bank. It's also not a time to trade in style for high wasted floral "maternity" dresses ditching taste for bump duds. During my pregnancy I wore Lululemon around the house and town daily, and sported Michael Stars tops or stretchy dresses to work. For readers who are currently pregnant or planning to get there soon, I'm selling my old duds on eBay.

Items I'm selling include:
  • Michael Stars tunic tanks ($19.99)
  • Michael Stars tees and long sleeve shirts
  • Splendid dresses
  • Susana Monaco dress
  • One shoulder brown dress ($25.00)
  • And more!
Email me (autreytaylor (at) gmail.com) if you want to bypass eBay and/or if you have questions.

The look of a professional pre/post/during preg

Sitting in staff this morning I looked around and noticed every man was wearing practically the same thing - blue shirt, khaki pants, brown belt and shoes. Some spiced it up with a blue plaid or pinstripe shirt, but the theme was the same. I noticed this same theme when I worked in Japan last year but it was black pants, black belt, black shoes, white shirt. Period.

I think in tech, there's definitely an unspoken "uniform" - you look the part much like in running. If a man showed up to work (again, in tech - advertising, architecture, etc. all different ballgames entirely) in fitted grey slacks with a purple shirt (picture Euro style), they wouldn't be part of the unspoken "club." On the running note, if a runner showed up to the starting line in long shorts and Velcro high-tops, they would still get the runner's courtesy, but definitely not be in the "club."

Women in tech, on the other hand, get to spice it up more. There's still definitely a theme, but we do get to have more fun. My preg version of the unspoken "uniform" is a black dress (stretchy), cardigan (cozy), heals (won't go without), and necklace - I add color where I can.

Post preg, I'll go back to the basics - pencil pants, long white blouse, blazer, heals (my boss says I gravitate to tranny shoes ... as long as I can keep up with the boys in them, I'll sport 'em), and chunky necklace. I might have to do the black on black or black on grey for a while to hide the "no I'm not pregnant anymore" belly - but I'll cross that (fashion) bridge when I get there.

To buy: Lululemon Jesus pants

I am in love with my new Lululemon Jesus pants. They're made with luon light which is awesome because they make for a lighter pant and can take me from Spring into Summer. I'm planning on sporting these to work when my boomin' belly goes beyond my jeans' capability (something I'm certain will happen soon).

Why I love them? Let me count the ways:
  1. They're perfect for pregnancy as I can roll them up or down
  2. They're a flowy fit and comfortable for those (very very rare) warm summer SF days
  3. They're simple

To Wear: Chi chi gym

I've decided to join the Bay Club - after my test of the pool and quick tour, I'm hooked! Plus I'm hoping to hear more juicy locker room conversations ;o) . Being about 50x chi chi-er than Crunch (which I still love, BTW) I've decided to dawn a chi chi outfit for the gym with my favorite sports apparel designers.

To wear: pregnant and chilly

The sun has peaked out in San Francisco but it's still chilly. Remember the old saying: "The coldest Winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco," by Mark Twain? Well, Winter > Spring is even colder!

Not one to shy away from style, though, here's my (chilly) San Francisco "bump" outfit for the day - oh, and this is celebrating week 20!

p.s. before I give you the preg outfit, you may want to check out EmilyStyle - that girl has a knack for everything style and even does consulting sometimes.

to wear: pregnant and chilly - by Marathon Mom on Polyvore.com

Blouse - Stella McCartney silk (I'm wearing a much cheaper version of this one)
Pants - Theory (I love love love these! I can still wear my pre-preg Theorys because of the low waist)
Cardigan - Theory cashmere (their cashmere sweaters are a staple)
Kitten heel - GoJane (I can't wear my tall shoes anymore (oh how I miss 4") because I keep wobbling over - not cool)
